"Because I was born and raised in southern California, I attribute my palette of intense colors to that region. Whether working in oils or in opaque gouache watercolors, my pigments stay close to the sun. I prefer to apply a coat of pure color (imprimatura) to the white ground with very little, if any, over painting. Cool, dark tones which generally recede are frequently applied to frontal areas, while warm and lighter tones often are used for distant shapes bringing them forward creating a flat format. Whether depicting the human figure, animal forms, still lifes or landscape images, my work focuses on the visual excitement of close color values as well as those that contrast dramatically."
